Estimated reading time: 1 minute

Accidents happen, and a knocked-out tooth (also called an avulsed tooth) is one of the most serious dental emergencies. If handled quickly and correctly, there’s a good chance the tooth can be saved. Here’s exactly what to do.

Time needed: 45 minutes

🦷 How-To: Respond to a Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth

  1. Stay Calm and Locate the Tooth

Pick it up carefully by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root.

  2. Rinse the Tooth Gently

Use water or saline to rinse off dirt. Do not scrub or use soap.

  3. Try to Reinsert the Tooth

If possible, place it gently back into the socket and hold it in place by biting down on a clean cloth or gauze.

  4. If You Can’t Reinsert It, Store It Properly

Place the tooth in milk, saline, or in your cheek (if safe) to keep it moist.

  5. Get to the Dentist Immediately

Time is critical—see your dentist within 30–60 minutes.
